Partagas Serie D Cigar No. 5: The Ultimate Intense Smoke

The Partagas Serie D Cigar No. 5 delivers the legendary, full-bodied punch of the classic Serie D line into a brilliantly compact format. If you love the deeper, earthier profile of Cuban tobacco but have limited time, this Petit Robusto is the perfect choice. This short stick has quickly become a global favorite among aficionados who want uncompromised strength without a two-hour commitment. When looking at the Partagas Serie D No 4 vs No 5 differences, the core distinction lies entirely in the length. While both cigars share a robust 50 ring gauge and identical tobaccos, this shorter version offers a faster, more concentrated flavor development from the very first puff.

What Makes This Cigar Special

As a shop owner, I always recommend this vitola to clients who want a premium, full-strength experience in under 45 minutes. Habanos SA originally released this blend as a limited edition in 2008, but global demand forced them to make it a permanent regular production staple by 2011. It captures everything that makes the brand famous: rich spice, impeccable balance, and thick, dense smoke. It is the ideal companion for a brisk evening or a sophisticated post-dinner break.

Construction and Appearance

Holding this cigar reveals the immaculate craftsmanship of the Vuelta Abajo region. The wrapper boasts a oily, dark Colorado wrapper leaf with minimal veining and a silky texture. The bunching is firm and consistent throughout, showing off a perfectly executed triple cap. It feels substantial in the hand, promising an elegant draw and a slow, even burn from start to finish.

Aroma, Draw and Burn

Before lighting, the cold draw offers rich notes of barnyard manure, dark cocoa, and cedar. Once lit, the draw provides just the right amount of resistance, producing thick clouds of creamy, aromatic smoke. The burn line stays sharp and straight, leaving behind a solid, salt-and-pepper ash that hangs on tightly. Meanwhile, the ambient aroma fills the room with a deep scent of roasted nuts and toasted leather.

Flavour and Tasting Experience

The initial third opens with a dramatic burst of black pepper, damp earth, and heavy cedar. As you move into the second third, the strength settles into a smooth, creamy profile dominated by bittersweet chocolate and dark espresso beans. The final third intensifies, delivering a bold, peppery finish that coats the palate beautifully without becoming bitter.
To elevate your experience, try a dedicated Partagas D5 tasting notes and pairing with a heavy pour of single malt scotch. The smoky, peaty character of a Lagavulin 16-Year-Old cuts through the dense earthiness of the cigar perfectly. If you prefer a sweeter profile, a premium XO Cognac like Remy Martin XO coaxes out the subtle cocoa and spice notes hidden in the wrapper.
